Lohri and Makar Sankranti are among the most joyful harvest festivals celebrated across India. These festivals mark the end of winter, the arrival of longer days, and the beginning of a new agricultural season. In 2026, Lohri will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 13, while Makar Sankranti will be observed on Wednesday, January 14.
Makar Sankranti is a special festival because it is linked to astronomy. On this day, the Sun moves from the zodiac of Sagittarius (Dhanu) into Capricorn (Makara). This transition is also known as Uttarayana, when the Sun begins its northward journey. In Hindu tradition, this movement is considered highly auspicious and is associated with positivity, new beginnings, and prosperity. Farmers across the country celebrate this time as it coincides with the mid-winter harvest.
Although the meaning of the festival remains the same, Makar Sankranti is known by different names in different regions of India. In Punjab, it is celebrated as Lohri, while Tamil Nadu celebrates it as Pongal. Assam observes Magh Bihu, Gujarat celebrates Uttarayana, Kerala marks Makaravilakku, Bihar celebrates Dahi Chura, and West Bengal observes Poush Sankranti. In Karnataka, it is called Suggi, while Maharashtra celebrates it as Makar Sankranti. Similar harvest festivals are also celebrated outside India, such as Maghe Sankranti in Nepal, Songkran in Thailand, and Thingyan in Myanmar.
Lohri, especially popular in Punjab, Haryana, and parts of North India, is a vibrant festival filled with warmth and happiness. People gather around bonfires, sing folk songs, perform traditional dances like bhangra and gidda, and enjoy seasonal foods such as peanuts, jaggery, sesame sweets, and popcorn. The bonfire symbolises the burning away of negativity and the welcoming of hope, success, and good health.
Both Lohri and Makar Sankranti celebrate gratitude, unity, and abundance. They remind us of the importance of nature, hard work, and togetherness. As families come together to share food, laughter, and blessings, these festivals spread joy and positivity during the cold winter season.
