If you have ever rage-quit the IRCTC website during Tatkal hours, today might just be your day. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is rolling out its completely redesigned website on July 15, 2026 — and the upgrades are significant.
The launch was announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after a student at a Rajasthan event flagged frustrations with the current website’s CAPTCHA verification issues. Vaishnaw immediately consulted an official and committed to a 30-day turnaround, confirming the July 15 date.
Speed and Capacity That Actually Matches Demand
The most headline-grabbing upgrade is raw capacity. The new platform has been rebuilt to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute — compared to the current system’s 32,000. The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) backend has also been upgraded to support over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, up from 4 lakh currently. Nearly 88% of reserved railway tickets are now booked online, making a stable, high-capacity system not a luxury but a necessity.
New Features Passengers Will Actually Use
Beyond speed, the redesigned website brings practical improvements. Passengers can now select their preferred seat during booking rather than relying on automatic allocation — a long-requested feature. A fare calendar lets travellers compare ticket prices across multiple dates at a glance, making it easier to find the best deal when travel dates are flexible.
The new interface also displays seat availability across Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier classes on a single screen, eliminating the need to switch between tabs. Repeated CAPTCHA prompts — one of the most common complaints — have been significantly reduced.
More Accessible for All Indians
The platform now supports multiple Indian languages and integrates concession booking for students, Divyangjan passengers, and patients into a single unified system — making it genuinely more inclusive.
The upgrade is part of a broader modernisation of the railway reservation system that Indian Railways has been pushing forward. For millions of daily users, today’s launch could mark the end of a long and frustrating chapter in online ticket booking.
