In a major success for Indian police, gangster Rahman Daku – a feared criminal mastermind from Bhopal – has been arrested by the Surat Crime Branch. Known in many places as Abid Ali, Raju, Abbas Ali, and Rahman Daku, he was wanted in several states for running a large network of organised crime.
Police caught Rahman Daku in Surat after receiving a secret tip-off that he had entered the city. Despite his dangerous reputation, the officers managed to arrest him without any gunfight. The operation was led by Inspector JN Goswami and his team, showing careful planning and quick action.
A Large and Dangerous Crime Network
Authorities say Rahman Daku was the head of a sprawling network that operated in 12 to 14 states. He controlled more than six gangs, each involved in serious crimes such as robbery, extortion, impersonation, and land grabbing. His brother, Zakir Ali, helped manage many of these operations. Instead of committing crimes himself, Rahman often planned and ordered others to carry them out.
Police described how members of his gang sometimes pretended to be police officers or officials to cheat people, especially senior citizens. They set up fake checkpoints, checked vehicles, and stole valuables, sometimes even carrying guns during their crimes.
Before his arrest, Rahman Daku was hiding after a large combing operation in Bhopal’s Irani Dera area. Police questioned more than 150 people and detained dozens, but Rahman had fled to states like Maharashtra and then on to Surat.
At the time of his arrest, Rahman faced at least 10 serious cases in different states. He has been taken to Bhopal on a court order, where he was sent to police custody for further investigation.
In court, Rahman claimed he was innocent, and his lawyer argued against a long police remand. However, police officials insisted that he was a habitual criminal involved in murder, arson, fraud, and robbery over many years.
The crime gang Rahman led was not small. The police found evidence of several criminal activities run like a structured organisation. Some members sold fake gold, others conducted fake raids, and land fraud was common. Shockingly, some arrested gang members were getting out on bail using fake identities and forged documents.
This arrest brings hope that authorities are finally catching powerful crime bosses who once acted with near impunity. But police say the investigation will continue, as Rahman’s network was wide and deeply rooted. For now, the man once known as ‘Rahman Daku’ is no longer a shadow, he is behind bars.
