Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: The Grand Chariot Festival That Moves the World
Today, July 16, 2026, millions of devotees across India and the world turn their hearts towards Puri, Odisha, as one of Hinduism’s most spectacular festivals begins — the Jagannath Rath Yatra.
The Rath Yatra is unique among Hindu festivals because the deities themselves come out to bless their devotees, rather than the other way around. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra travel from the main Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, where they rest for eight days before returning in what is known as the Bahuda Yatra.
The Chariots That Inspire Awe
Three massive handcrafted wooden chariots dominate the Grand Road in Puri. Lord Jagannath’s chariot, Nandighosha, stands around 45 feet tall with 16 wheels and features a striking red and yellow canopy. Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, Taladhwaja, is decorated with a green and red canopy, while Devi Subhadra’s chariot, Darpadalana, has 12 wheels and a black and red canopy. Skilled artisans construct these chariots from scratch every year using age-old techniques — the previous year’s chariots are never reused.
A Festival of Equality
One of the most powerful traditions of the Rath Yatra is Chhera Pahanra — the King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom, symbolising that everyone is equal before God. The festival also holds special significance for those who cannot enter the Jagannath Temple, including non-Hindus, who can witness the darshan of the deities from the Grand Road during the procession.
2026: A Special Year
This year’s Rath Yatra also coincides with a rare occasion — the Nabakalebar Rath Yatra, where all the Lords receive a new form after nineteen years, making the 2026 celebration particularly momentous for devotees.
Greetings from Leaders
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both extended warm greetings. In Ahmedabad, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed the Pahind Vidhi ritual for the 149th Rath Yatra, calling it a symbol of communal harmony.
