Jagdeep Dhankhar has stepped down as the Vice President of India, surprising many in politics. He said he was resigning due to health reasons, but the Opposition is wondering if there is another reason behind it. Some political experts are closely watching the situation and are asking if this decision is linked to the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections later this year.
People on social media and in political circles are guessing who might be the next Vice President of India. Names like Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor are being discussed as possible choices to take Jagdeep Dhankhar’s place.
Jagdeep Dhankhar had been the Vice President of India since 2022. Earlier, he was the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. At 74, he was expected to remain Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha until 2027. However, he resigned on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
In his resignation letter, Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that he was stepping down from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect to focus on his health and follow medical advice, as per Article 67(a) of the Constitution. He expressed his deep gratitude to the President, acknowledging her constant support and the positive working relationship they had shared.
He also thanked the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, saying their cooperation had been invaluable and that he had learned a lot during his tenure. Additionally, he appreciated the Members of Parliament for their warmth, trust, and affection, saying their support would always remain in his memory.
Dhankhar further mentioned that it had been a privilege to serve as Vice President during a time of significant economic and national growth, and called it an honor to witness and be part of such a transformative period in India’s journey.
Jagdeep Dhankhar mentioned that as he steps down from the prestigious post, he feels proud of India’s growing global status and remarkable achievements, and he remains confident about the country’s bright future.
Regarding the vacancy in the Vice President’s office, it was noted that the Constitution does not clearly mention who will take over the Vice President’s responsibilities if the post becomes vacant before the end of the term or when the Vice President assumes the role of the President. The only related provision in the Constitution is about the Vice President’s duties as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In such cases, the Deputy Chairman or any other member appointed by the President takes over the responsibilities temporarily.
