Tesla has officially entered the Indian market by opening its first showroom in Mumbai’s BKC. The first car they are offering is the Model Y SUV, which comes in two versions — one priced at ₹59.89 lakh and the long-range version at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom prices). Deliveries are expected to start by mid to late 2025.
India’s Efforts to Attract Tesla
After complaints about high import taxes, the Indian government introduced a new EV policy last year. The policy allows some electric cars to be imported at lower taxes — but only for companies that agree to set up factories in India and invest at least ₹4,150 crore.
Many saw this move as a way to attract Tesla to invest and build in India.
Even though India has relaxed its rules, Tesla still hasn’t shown interest in making its cars in India. The company already has large factories in China, which is an important market for them.
Last month, Union Heavy Industries Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy said that Tesla is not planning to build cars in India for now, but might open two stores here. On the other hand, global electric car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen-Škoda, Hyundai, and Kia have shown interest in applying for the Indian government’s electric car manufacturing scheme, which was announced in March last year.
Tesla Model 3: Simple Overview of Its Design and Features
The Tesla Model 3 is one of the company’s most affordable cars. Globally, Tesla also offers the Model S, Model X, Cybertruck, and now the Model Y — which is the first model to launch in India.
At first, the Model 3 may look like a sporty car, but it’s actually a full-sized sedan. It’s about 4.7 meters long and 1.8 meters wide. The front design is clean and modern, with no traditional grille, which is common in electric cars. Its sleek headlamps give it a futuristic look.
Under the bonnet, there’s no engine. Instead, there’s a “frunk” (front trunk) — a small storage area that’s quite useful.
From the side, the car has a smooth roofline that makes it look stylish. The large alloy wheels make it stand out, though the thin tyres may not be ideal for rough Indian roads.
There are many smart design touches:
- Cameras on the front sides help with driving safety.
- The pillarless doors give it a sporty feel.
- You can unlock the car with a key card near the B-pillar.
- The flush door handles sit flat against the body and look neat.
At the back, the sloping design hides a spacious boot, and the glass roof gives a wide, open feeling inside the car — and it can even open up.
The charging port is on the left rear side. Just tap it, and it opens up like something from science fiction. There are two ports inside:
- One for normal charging
- One for Supercharging, which can add 277 km of range in just 15 minutes.
This fast charging makes Tesla great for long trips — and the company is now working on setting up its Supercharger stations in India, expected to be ready before Model Y deliveries begin.
