Karthi’s much-awaited spy thriller Sardar 2 hit theatres worldwide on September 10, and early reactions on X suggest a decidedly mixed reception from critics and audiences.
Directed by PS Mithran, the film is a sequel to 2022’s Sardar and sees Karthi reprise his dual role as RAW agent Chandra Bose, alias “Sardar,” and Inspector Vijay Prakash. The story unfolds across dual timelines, tracing Sardar’s origin story in flashback while his son confronts a present-day threat from a formidable new antagonist, SJ Suryah’s “Black Dagger.” The supporting cast includes Malavika Mohanan, Rajisha Vijayan, Ashika Ranganath, and Yogi Babu.
Karthi’s performance is emerging as the film’s biggest strength. One viewer called it “an action entertainer that is heavy on information and research, grand in making,” crediting Karthi with holding the film together through its slower stretches and lengthy runtime — reportedly around 179 minutes. The same viewer rated the first half stronger than the post-interval portion.
Another point in the film’s favour: its restraint. A viewer appreciated that Sardar 2 stays true to its espionage roots without forcing in unnecessary romantic subplots or musical detours, also praising the film’s public-awareness message around antibiotic misuse — a nod to the franchise’s history of weaving social issues (the first film tackled water commercialisation) into its plot.
The criticism, however, is louder. The background score, VFX, and writing all came under fire, with SJ Suryah’s antagonist — despite being built up as a menacing “Black Dagger” — reportedly coming across as underwhelming on screen. One user put it bluntly, saying Suryah “adds more noise than impact.”
Excessive action sequences were another sore point. Viewers felt the film leaned too heavily on over-the-top stunts, with one noting that “impossible stunts and loud action make the serious moments feel silly and unconvincing.”
With Karthi’s screen presence keeping things watchable but the technical and writing departments drawing flak, Sardar 2 looks set for a divisive theatrical run. It also faces stiff box-office competition, releasing alongside Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s Ranabaali. Whether the goodwill from the original Sardar — which grossed over ₹84 crore worldwide — carries this sequel through remains to be seen.
