Anam Mirza shared on Instagram that she no longer uses UPI apps like Google Pay. Her decision received mixed reactions online, with some people criticising her and others backing her choice.

In the video, Anam Mirza mentioned that she had stopped using Google Pay and other UPI apps this year. She said she cleared her UPI accounts, deleted the apps, and kept no balance.

She explained that this change helped her become more careful with her spending. Although it was difficult in the beginning—she even had to ask friends to buy her coffee—she eventually got used to it.

Anam Mirza shared this advice as part of her series Little Changes, Big Impact. She explained that staying away from instant payments made her more conscious of her spending and allowed her to save better.

Anam Mirza’s decision received mixed reactions online.

Some users criticized her, saying her approach was easier because of her privileged background. One person commented that UPI is a big help for middle-class people and deleting the app just to save money was too extreme. Another joked, asking what good saving all that money would do, and suggested spending some to help others earn.

On the other hand, many appreciated her idea. One user shared that they had been following a similar approach for six months and it helped control overspending. Others agreed, calling it a smart move to manage expenses better.

UPI in India

As of May 2025, there are 673 banks active on UPI, with transactions exceeding ₹25 lakh crore, according to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). SBI leads the UPI space with nearly 5,000 transactions per minute, followed by HDFC Bank with about 1,500 per minute.

In comparison, the U.S. uses multiple digital payment systems like PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle. In 2024, Zelle had 15.1 crore users and processed over ₹85.84 lakh crore, marking the highest-ever for a peer-to-peer payment service in a year.
