Radhika Pandey, Economist, writer, and policy researcher, passed away on Saturday at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi after recently undergoing emergency liver transplant surgery.
Radhika Pandey, an associate professor at NIPFP, was a macroeconomist with over 20 years of experience in public policy and teaching. She was an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and had over 20 years of experience in public policy and teaching. Earlier, she had worked as a lecturer at National Law University (NLU) Jodhpur.
At 46, she was also known for her weekly column and video series MacroSutra for ThePrint, where she explained current financial and economic issues.
Before joining NIPFP in 2008, Pandey taught finance, law, and regulation to postgraduate students at National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur. She completed her MA and PhD in economics from Jai Narain Vyas University (earlier called the University of Jodhpur) and earned her BA in economics from Banaras Hindu University.
In addition to writing a regular column for ThePrint since 2021, Pandey was the lead coordinator for the Task Force on Public Debt Management Agency, set up by the Ministry of Finance in 2014. Her wide range of research work showed her deep knowledge on topics like bond markets, public finance, the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) tax, and business cycles.
She also worked with Patnaik on a research team led by Justice B.N. Srikrishna for the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission in 2011. Her interests went beyond Indian financial regulations—she was also part of a research group led by former bureaucrat U.K. Sinha for the ‘Working Group on Foreign Investment.’
Pandey was admitted to ILBS Hospital earlier in the month after suffering from acute liver failure due to jaundice. Despite being in the hospital, she insisted on recording her last Macrosutra video for ThePrint from there.
Patnaik shared that he had visited her and suggested she take a break from work to rest and recover. But she refused, saying she would still record the video and write her article. He said this showed her deep commitment to her work, something he felt was rare to see today.
