History and Significance of National Sports Day

National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, fondly remembered as the “Wizard of Hockey.” Known for his extraordinary control of the ball, his skills were so magical that his stick was once checked to see if it contained a magnet. Even Adolf Hitler, after witnessing his brilliance in the 1936 Olympics, offered him a high military rank, which Dhyan Chand declined.

He played a crucial role in India’s Olympic gold medal victories in 1928, 1932, and 1936, laying the foundation for India’s dominance in hockey, with the nation eventually winning eight Olympic golds in the sport. Widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, his legacy is honoured not just through National Sports Day but also with India’s highest sporting honour, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, named after him.

The celebrations also uphold the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect, along with Paralympic principles of Courage, Determination, Inspiration, and Equality, making it a true festival of India’s sporting spirit.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports stated that the movement aims to raise awareness about spending at least 60 minutes daily on physical activity to help prevent lifestyle diseases. Eminent athletes and public figures will participate in the celebrations, joining sports events in state capitals and districts on August 29.

National Sports Day, first observed in 2012, highlights the importance of promoting sports and honoring athletes. On this day, the President of India presents top sporting honors like the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The government also uses the occasion to launch key initiatives, including the Khelo India movement, introduced in 2018.
