Japan Hit by 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake  Tsunami Warning

Late on Monday night, Japan’s northeastern coast was hit by a strong 7.5 magnitude earthquake, around 44 miles off the shore, at a depth of about 33 miles. The quake struck near 11:15 p.m. local time and was felt even in Tokyo, which is more than 400 miles away. The tremors lasted for more than 30 seconds, causing widespread fear and chaos.

Soon after the quake, the country’s weather agency, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA),issued a tsunami warning for a long stretch of coastline, including Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures.

Evacuations, Damage, and Initial Impact

More than 114,000 people were told to evacuate to safer zones or higher ground. Authorities warned that aftershocks or an even bigger quake might follow.

Across Aomori and Iwate, there were reports of power outages, some fires, and damage to buildings and roads. Some trains and expressways got suspended as a safety measure.

Coastal monitors recorded small tsunami waves: about 2.3 feet at one port, and roughly 1.3 feet at other points. Because the waves remained small, the agency later downgraded the alert to a tsunami advisory, then removed it altogether the next morning.

Importantly, officials confirmed that nuclear plants along the coast, such as the Higashidōri Nuclear Power Plant and the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, were safe. No problems were detected there.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged everyone near the coast to stay alert this week and be ready to evacuate if needed. She emphasized that each person must take personal responsibility for their safety.

The country lies in a high-risk seismic zone known as the “Ring of Fire,” which has seen massive earthquakes before. The 2011 quake and tsunami, one of Japan’s worst disasters, had caused massive destruction and a nuclear accident. Officials warn that such events remain possible, so people must stay cautious.

If you live in or visit Japan, especially near the coast, it is wise to keep emergency kits ready, save contacts of local shelters, and follow updates from official channels like JMA. Stay alert, avoid rumors, and take action based on real alerts.

Nature’s power is huge, and while many lives and people’s safety got disrupted, this quake-and-alert shows how important it is to stay prepared and keep calm.
