The idea started in 1991 at a youth forum in Vienna, Austria. In 1999, ministers in charge of youth declared August 12 as International Youth Day, and the UN General Assembly approved it the same year. The first celebration took place on August 12, 2000.
In 2025, it will be observed on Tuesday, August 12, with the theme Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Beyond.”
