Indian Railways Brings Big Food Brands to Stations

Indian Railways is bringing a tasty change to train stations across the country. In a big move, the Ministry of Railways has approved the entry of top national and international food brands into railway stations. Now, you may soon spot McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Haldiram’s, Bikanerwala, and Baskin Robbins at some of the busiest stations.

This new idea aims to make station food better for the millions of people who travel by train every day. Rather than just chai stalls or juice kiosks, passengers will now have the option to enjoy well-known food brands. The goal is to raise hygiene, quality, and service – bringing food choices at railway stations closer to international standards.

The Railway Board calls these shops ‘Premium Brand Catering Outlets’. A circular sent by the Railways explains how this will be added into the existing catering policy (from 2017). These new outlets will be chosen through the regular e-auction process, not just given away by nomination. This will keep things fair and transparent.

Only stations with enough space and enough demand will be allowed to have these outlets. The license for each brand is valid for five years, just like the other existing categories in the catering policy. License fees and financial rules will follow the same rules already in place.

To make sure this plan works smoothly, Zonal Railways have been asked to create special contracts for each station. This means the food outlets will be tailored to local needs, operating realities, and passenger flow

With this new plan, the passengers will get familiar and reliable food options while waiting for or traveling by train. There will be better cleanliness and service at your favorite station shops. And allegedly, food choices will now include both local and global flavors, making travel more comfortable and enjoyable.

This upgrade in the railway’s food system is more than just a business decision – it is a promise to improve the daily experience of rail travelers. By allowing trusted food brands and enforcing transparent licensing, Indian Railways is making a big bet on improving passenger satisfaction. If everything goes well, station food will no longer be an afterthought but a destination in itself.
