Instagram faces backlash for “borrowing” again — this time, reposts from Twitter, following earlier copies like Stories and Reels.
Instagram now has a “Reposts” tab on profiles. This feature lets users share public reels and posts from others with their followers. These reposts appear in a separate tab and may also show up in followers’ feeds. It can help creators reach more people, even those who don’t follow them.
On Wednesday, Meta announced these new Instagram features, including reposting, a location-sharing map, and updates to the ‘Friends’ list. These are meant to make sharing posts, finding friends nearby, and discovering content easier. However, many users criticised the move, saying Instagram is copying features from TikTok, X (Twitter), and Snapchat.
How to repost on Instagram?
- Tap the repost icon on any public reel or post.
- If you want, add a note in the thought bubble.
- Press save to share it.
Instagram Map also lets friends share posts based on location.
Like on X, Instagram now lets users repost public feed posts and video reels. These reposts show up in friends’ and followers’ feeds, and in a new “Reposts” tab on the user’s profile. The original creator gets credit, but the content can still reach someone else’s followers.
Starting August 6 in the U.S., Instagram users can choose to share their last active location on the Instagram Map with selected accounts, and turn it off anytime. The map also helps explore location-based content, like concerts or restaurants friends post about. Parents with supervision controls can manage who their children share locations with, get alerts if their teen starts sharing, and decide whether the teen can use the feature at all.
The reels now has a “Friends” tab that shows public posts your friends liked or commented on, plus suggestions from Blends you’ve joined. You can hide your likes and comments so they don’t appear there, and you can also mute activity updates from certain people.
