The new feature is currently rolling out to beta users, allowing people to make calls directly from their web browsers without needing a separate desktop app for Windows or macOS. Previously, WhatsApp Web was limited to text messaging, file sharing, and media viewing. If users wanted to make voice or video calls, they had to rely on the WhatsApp mobile app or download the dedicated desktop application. Now, with calling integrated into the web interface, users can simply click the new call or video icons located at the top of individual chats to start a conversation. This update aims to mimic features already available in the desktop app, making the experience more consistent across platforms.
One of the biggest advantages of bringing calls to the web browser is its wide compatibility. Since the feature runs entirely within the browser, people on operating systems that don’t support the WhatsApp desktop app, such as Linux, can finally make voice and video calls without extra software.
