The sudden death of Assamese singer and composer Zubeen Garg has left fans across India heartbroken and confused. Now, new reports have raised serious questions about what really happened in Singapore, where the 52-year-old artist passed away.
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to perform at the celebration of 60 years of India-Singapore diplomatic relations and the India-ASEAN Year of Tourism. On September 19, 2025, he reportedly drowned while swimming off a Singapore island. The first autopsy report in Singapore confirmed death by drowning and found no signs of foul play.
However, soon after his body returned to India, doubts began to surface. Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, refused to accept the report, demanding a deeper investigation. The Assam government ordered a second autopsy before his cremation on September 23, which took place with full state honours and a 21-gun salute.
Then came the shocking twist. Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Zubeen’s band member and a key witness, accused the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta of poisoning Zubeen. He claimed the death was a planned conspiracy, not an accident. Goswami stated that Zubeen was an expert swimmer, so drowning naturally was unlikely.
According to Goswami’s statement, when Zubeen began frothing at the mouth and nose, Sharma reportedly said, “Jabo de, jabo de” (let him go), and ignored the warning signs, calling it “acid reflux” instead of seeking help. Goswami also alleged that Sharma told him not to share any video footage from the yacht.
So far, four people have been arrested — manager Siddharth Sharma, organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, drummer Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta. They are in CID custody as investigators probe inconsistencies in their statements.
On October 3, the Governor of Assam ordered a judicial commission headed by retired Gauhati High Court judge Soumitra Saikia to investigate the circumstances of Zubeen’s death.
Though the Singapore police maintain there was no foul play, fans and family in Assam remain unconvinced. As the investigation continues, the question remains — was Zubeen Garg’s death really an accident, or a tragic conspiracy?
