Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for his unforgettable role as Karna in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat (1988), passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 68, after a long battle with cancer. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian television history, leaving behind a legacy of powerful performances and memorable characters.
Born on November 9, 1956, in Punjab, Pankaj Dheer came from a family deeply connected to the film industry. His father, C.L. Dheer, was a filmmaker known for movies like Bahu Beti and Zindagi. Pankaj followed in his footsteps, entering the entertainment industry in the 1980s with small roles before achieving stardom as Karna, one of Indian television’s first anti-heroes.
As Karna, Pankaj portrayed a complex and emotional character — a brave warrior searching for identity, fighting against destiny, and earning the audience’s sympathy despite being on the opposite side of the Pandavas. His performance in Mahabharat turned him into a household name and set a benchmark for acting in mythological shows.
Beyond Mahabharat, he became known for his role as King Shivdutt in the fantasy serial Chandrakanta (1994), another strong yet layered character that showcased his versatility. He also appeared in popular TV shows like Zee Horror Show, Kanoon, Badho Bahu, Sasural Simar Ka, and more recently, Dhruv Tara – Samay Sadi Se Pare (2024).
On the big screen, Pankaj Dheer worked in several hit films including Soldier, Andaz, Baadshah, Sadak, and Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge. Off-screen, he co-founded Visage Studioz in Mumbai with his brother and established the Abbhinnay Acting Academy in 2010 to train aspiring actors.
He is survived by his wife Anita Dheer, a costume designer, and his son Nikitin Dheer, known for films like Chennai Express and Sooryavanshi. His daughter-in-law, Kratika Sengar, is also a well-known television actress.
Pankaj Dheer’s contribution to Indian entertainment—both as an actor and mentor—will be remembered for generations. His portrayal of Karna remains timeless, symbolizing dignity, courage, and depth in storytelling.
