Remembering the Iron Man of India on National Unity Day
Every year on October 31, India celebrates National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. This special day marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, who played a vital role in uniting the country after independence.
Sardar Patel, often called the ‘Iron Man of India’, was the main force behind bringing together more than 560 princely states to form a single, united India. His vision, courage, and leadership helped shape the nation we live in today. To honor his great contribution, the Government of India declared October 31 as National Unity Day in 2014.
This year’s celebrations mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. Across the country, people are paying tribute through various events, campaigns, and marches that highlight his legacy and the importance of unity.
Celebrations Across India
In Delhi, the government has launched a two-month-long campaign called “Sardar@150” to celebrate Patel’s life and message. The campaign aims to inspire young Indians to value self-reliance, integrity, and national unity. As part of the celebrations, Unity Marches are being held across all 11 districts of Delhi-starting from Patel Chowk and ending at the National War Memorial. Students, teachers, NCC and NSS volunteers are actively participating in these events.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens across the country to join the ‘Run for Unity’, a nationwide marathon that symbolizes oneness and collective strength. The Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran team will also perform an air show to pay tribute to Sardar Patel’s visionary leadership.
In Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, a grand event called Bharat Parv will be held from November 1 to 15. The celebrations will feature cultural performances, a food festival showcasing cuisines from different states, and the inauguration of infrastructure projects worth ₹280 crore.
The Message of Unity
National Unity Day reminds us that our strength lies in togetherness. Sardar Patel’s dream was of a nation that stands united, despite its diversity. On this day, let us honor his vision by promoting peace, respect, and harmony – values that continue to hold India together.
