Lunar Eclipse September 2025 Timings in India:
Astronomers confirmed that the September 2025 lunar eclipse was visible from start to finish across India. The event began at 8:58 PM IST on 7 September and reached its peak totality at 11:41 PM IST. Viewers in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai witnessed the celestial spectacle.
Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Across India
From Ladakh to Tamil Nadu, skywatchers witnessed a rare “Blood Moon” total lunar eclipse on Sunday night. The celestial show began at 8:58 PM, as Earth’s shadow slowly darkened the Moon, and lasted until 2:25 AM.
The total phase occurred between 11:01 PM and 12:23 AM—for about 82 minutes—when the Moon was fully engulfed in Earth’s shadow, glowing in a copper-red hue that created the iconic Blood Moon effect. The eclipse wrapped up around 12:26 AM, leaving viewers with a breathtaking memory despite clouds and monsoon showers in some regions.
What is a Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse?
A total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth aligns between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, only the red wavelengths reach the Moon, making it glow in a deep crimson shade—popularly called the Blood Moon.
The highlight was the appearance of a striking “blood moon”, as the Earth’s shadow turned the moon a deep red. This phenomenon occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon align, causing the planet’s atmosphere to scatter sunlight—allowing only the red wavelengths to reach the lunar surface.
The eclipse lasted globally from 17:30 GMT to 18:52 GMT, with the best views in Asia (especially India and China), as well as parts of Africa and western Australia. Stargazers in Europe caught a partial view during moonrise, while the Americas missed the event entirely.
Astrophysicist Ryan Milligan explained that the moon appears red because blue light scatters more easily in Earth’s atmosphere, while red light passes through, giving the eclipse its dramatic color.
Unlike solar eclipses, no special glasses are needed to watch a lunar eclipse—only clear skies and a good vantage point.
The previous total lunar eclipse occurred in March 2025, while the one before that was in 2022.
How to Watch a Lunar Eclipse?
- Choose a dark spot – Move away from city lights for a clearer view.
- Know the timings – Check the exact local time when each eclipse phase begins.
- No equipment required – Safe to watch with the naked eye, though binoculars or a telescope make it better.
- Look for the Blood Moon – During totality, the Moon glows red as sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere.
- For photography – Use a tripod and manual camera settings (DSLR or phone’s pro mode) for sharp, bright shots.
