India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has caused major disruption by cancelling more than 550 domestic and international flights across the country. Over the past three days, airports in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Goa saw hundreds of passengers left stranded. For example, Delhi alone accounted for 172 cancelled flights, while Mumbai had 118, Bengaluru 100, and Hyderabad 75 cancellations.
IndiGo publicly apologised for the chaos. In a statement, CEO Pieter Elbers admitted the airline could not fulfill its promise of smooth travel, explaining that the trouble was caused by ‘a mix of operational challenges’. These included technology glitches, schedule changes, bad weather, heavy air traffic congestion, and new stricter aviation rules. He said restoring normal flights will not be easy.
What is Behind This Mass Cancellation?
At the heart of the problem are new rules from the national aviation regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). The updated rules aimed to improve pilot and crew welfare, limit night flights, reduce consecutive working hours, and ensure sufficient rest for aviation staff. For most airlines, these changes are manageable. But for IndiGo, with its large fleet and busy scheduling, the rules caused major disruption.
IndiGo typically runs about 2,300 flights daily, roughly double many competitors. With strict new rosters, even a small crew shortage or scheduling error can cascade into hundreds of cancellations or delays.
Flight Reschedules and Government Action
After a meeting with DGCA and civil-aviation officials, IndiGo revised its flight plans and introduced pre-planned cancellations to restore normalcy. Meanwhile, the regulator is investigating, asking the airline to explain the sharp rise in cancelled and delayed flights during November.
For passengers, especially those travelling in the coming days, the message is to check flight status ahead of time and expect possible changes.
Expect uncertainty and potential cancellations on short notice.
- Keep checking airline notifications and airport dashboards
- For essential travel: book with some buffer time, and avoid tight connections
IndiGo’s recent troubles are a warning about how regulatory changes and heavy flight demand can clash. While safety rules are critical, smooth implementation is equally important, for airlines and the millions of passengers who rely on them every day.
