India Pays $35.18 Million to UN Regular Budget for 2026, Joins Honour Roll

India has once again demonstrated its commitment to global cooperation and multilateralism by paying its full assessed contribution of USD 35.18 million to the United Nations (UN) Regular Budget for 2026. The payment was made on 3 February 2026, well within the 30-day deadline set by UN financial regulations, securing India’s place on the UN’s ‘honour roll’ of member states that have cleared their dues in full and on time.

The UN Regular Budget is the main funding source for the organisation’s core work, including global peace and security initiatives, development programmes, human rights efforts, and everyday administrative operations. Every UN member state is assessed a contribution based on its economic capacity, as determined by the UN Committee on Contributions. These assessments ensure that the organisation has the resources it needs to function effectively.

Timely payments matter because delays can disrupt programme planning and affect the UN’s cash flow. Being on the honour roll signals fiscal responsibility and support for the institution’s mission.

India’s Honour Roll Status

By paying its USD 35.18 million contribution by the due date, India joined a select group of 47 UN member states that met their financial obligations in full by early February 2026. This reflects not just financial compliance but also India’s sustained engagement with the United Nations.

The development was announced during the UN daily press briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In a lighter moment, Dujarric quizzed journalists by referring to India as the home of the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue at 182 metres, located in Gujarat and dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

India has a long history of supporting the United Nations and its work. The country regularly pays its contributions on time and participates actively in peacekeeping missions, sustainable development programmes, climate change dialogues, and efforts to reform global governance structures.

India’s timely payment has both symbolic and practical significance. It reinforces India’s reputation as a responsible global stakeholder, helps ensure the smooth functioning of UN programmes, and strengthens India’s voice in international diplomacy. Actions like these also support India’s broader push for more representation for developing countries in global institutions and decision-making forums.

By honoring its financial commitments to the UN, India continues to underline its faith in a rules-based international order and its role as a constructive partner in addressing global challenges.
