ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Why Kolkata & Ahmedabad Tickets Come With a Guarantee

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already caught headlines, not just for the action on the field, but for a unique ticket policy that has become a talking point among cricket fans worldwide. As tickets for the knockout stages, especially the semi-finals and the final, went on sale, the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced a special refund clause that guarantees ticket holders won’t lose out if match venues change due to team qualifications.

The backdrop to this policy lies in the venue arrangements for the World Cup’s final stages. The first semi-final, scheduled for March 4, was labelled a floating venue, meaning the match could be hosted either at Eden Gardens in Kolkata or at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, depending on which teams qualify. The second semi-final is set for Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The final is currently slated for Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8, but that too isn’t set in stone.

The Pakistan Factor

The defining trigger for the refund promise is Pakistan’s qualification. Due to diplomatic and logistical considerations, Pakistan won’t play its knockout matches on Indian soil. So:

  • If Pakistan qualifies for the first semi-final, the game will shift to Colombo, and tickets bought for Kolkata will be refunded.
  • If Pakistan reaches the final, the summit clash will move from Ahmedabad to Colombo, and tickets sold for Ahmedabad will also be refunded.

This ‘floating venue and refund policy’ means fans can buy tickets confidently despite uncertainty over exact locations. The ICC has been clear that any tickets for a match that doesn’t take place at the originally planned venue will be refunded in full.

For many supporters, especially those planning travel and accommodation around marquee matches, venue certainty is essential. By guaranteeing refunds, the ICC has provided transparency and built trust with ticket buyers. It’s a move that acknowledges both the unpredictable nature of sport and the complex geopolitical relationships that can influence where big matches are played.

In short, this unique arrangement ensures cricket fans are protected financially while adding an intriguing layer of strategy to how fans plan their World Cup experience.
