Guru Nanak Jayanti: A Festival of Light, Equality and Service

Every year, Sikhs and many others across India and the world celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav. In 2025, the festival falls on Wednesday, 5 November, marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of its ten Gurus.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in what is now Nankana Sahib (in modern-day Pakistan). His life and teachings stressed equality, truth, compassion and seeing the one Divine in all.

How Is Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrated?

As dawn breaks on Jayanti, devotees take part in Prabhat Pheris, early morning processions filled with hymns. Later come the Nagar Kirtans, vibrant marches where the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in a beautifully decorated palki (palanquin). People sing, play martial art displays like Gatka, and march together in unity.

Inside the Gurudwaras (Sikh temples), the atmosphere is alive with devotion: hymns, prayers and the continuous recitation of scripture. Langar, the community kitchen, serves free meals all day as a symbol of service and equality, one of Guru Nanak’s key messages.

On this day, the world is reminded that true spirituality goes hand in hand with service, equality and kindness. Guru Nanak’s message was simple: there is one God and all human beings are connected.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is not just a celebration, it is a call to live with values that benefit everyone. It bridges faiths and communities, showing that respect, humility, and service are universal. On this day, banks and schools in many parts of India remain closed as people gather in devotion and community service.
