Its roots go back to 1997, when the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. This initiative aimed to promote peace and non-violence starting from the first day of the new millennium.
A key contributor to spreading this idea was Linda Grover, who helped popularize the concept, especially in the United States. One important effort was the book “One Day in Peace – January 1, 2000”, which imagined a future where a single day was lived without war or conflict anywhere in the world.
In 1999, the United Nations invited all member countries to dedicate January 1 to developing strategies for peacebuilding and harmony. The positive response and global participation showed that people across the world supported this vision.
As a result, in 2001, the United Nations officially declared Global Family Day as an annual observance. Since then, it has been celebrated every year to reinforce the idea that the world is a global village where everyone is connected.
