Heavy rain in Uttar Pradesh has caused floods in 13 districts. Officials said on Monday (August 4, 2025) that major rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Betwa are flowing above the danger level in many areas.
The Ganga is above the danger mark in Varanasi, Mirzapur, Ghazipur, and Ballia. The Yamuna is also overflowing in Auraiya, Kalpi, Hamirpur, Prayagraj, and Banda. The Betwa is flowing above the danger level in Hamirpur too.
On Sunday (August 3, 2025), the state received 14.2 mm of rain, with 24 districts seeing heavy rainfall.
At present, 13 districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj, Jalaun, Auraiya, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Kanpur Dehat, Banda, Etawah, Fatehpur, Kanpur city, and Chitrakoot, are affected by floods.
In Varanasi, the Ganga river crossed the danger mark on Monday morning (August 4, 2025), flooding the ghats. Due to rising water, authorities have shifted cremations and religious ceremonies to rooftops and raised platforms.
The Central Water Commission reported the Ganga’s level at 72.1 metres—above the danger level of 71.262 metres. All ghats are underwater, and the famous Ganga aarti is now held on rooftops.
District officials have banned boat movement in the river as a safety measure. NDRF teams are patrolling the flood-hit areas and rescuing people to safer places.
In Prayagraj, continuous heavy rain has caused the Ganga and Yamuna rivers to rise above the danger mark of 84.73 metres since Saturday (August 4, 2025), flooding over 200 villages and around 60 areas in the city.
On Monday morning, Yamuna’s water level in Naini was 86.04 metres, and Ganga’s level in Phaphamau was 86.03 metres.
Schools have been closed, and flood relief camps have been set up. 107 urban areas and many rural villages across five tehsils are affected.
