Nineteen years after Awarapan first broke hearts and quietly became a cult classic, Emraan Hashmi is back as Shivam — and the wound, it seems, never really healed. The official teaser of Awarapan 2 dropped on the original film’s 19th anniversary, and within minutes, it had fans diving headfirst into nostalgia.
The teaser opens with Hashmi paying homage at the grave of Aaliyah Hamid, the character once played by Shriya Saran — a quiet, devastating moment that immediately signals this sequel isn’t interested in moving on from the original’s heartbreak. Instead, it leans into it. Set against dark tones and brooding silhouettes, Hashmi narrates with the same world-weariness fans fell in love with: “Dard se purana rishta hai mera (I have an old connection with pain).”
What makes the teaser linger is its writing. “Kuch logon ki kahaniya unki marzi se khatam nahi hoti; unki kahani doosron ke liye likhi jaati hai (Some people’s stories don’t end with their consent; they are written for others),” Hashmi says — a line that hints at unfinished business and a story being pulled back into motion against his will.
The teaser also introduces the new ensemble joining Shivam’s world this time around — Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, both playing pivotal roles whose dynamics with Hashmi’s character remain shrouded in mystery for now. Amid flashes of Hashmi fighting off goons, he delivers a declaration that sets the emotional stakes for the film: this time, he will either perish, or finally lose his awarapan — his restless, self-destructive craziness.
Adding to the wave of nostalgia, a reprised version of the iconic Toh Phir Aao plays through the teaser, bridging the emotional core of the original with this new chapter.
The first Awarapan, directed by Mohit Suri and released in 2007, didn’t make major box office waves at the time but went on to earn a devoted fanbase, with its soundtrack still considered among Bollywood’s best. This time, helmed by director Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, Awarapan 2 is set to hit theatres on August 14, 2026 — and if the teaser is anything to go by, old wounds are about to reopen.
