Arijit Singh, the voice that defined a generation of love songs, left fans heartbroken when he announced his decision to step away from playback singing. The double National Award-winning singer shared the surprising update in an Instagram post on Tuesday night, where he wished everyone a happy new year and revealed that he would no longer take up new film songs.
The announcement came just days after Maatrubhumi, his latest duet with Shreya Ghoshal for the Salman Khan-starrer Battle of Galwan, was released online. For many, the timing of this decision seemed sudden, but those who know Arijit closely say it was long coming.
In a post that circulated widely online, Arijit explained that there was not a single reason behind his choice. ‘I have been trying to do this since a long time’, he wrote. ‘One of the reasons is simple, I get bored pretty quick. That is why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs during live performances. So here is the thing, I got bored.’
To understand this, one must look back at his remarkable journey. From being a contestant on Fame Gurukul in 2005 to becoming one of India’s most streamed artists, Arijit’s career was built on talent, hard work, and humility. His breakthrough came with Aashiqui 2 in 2013, and since then, he has sung over 800 songs, an astonishing number that reflects both his popularity and relentless pace.
Despite the fame, Arijit remained deeply private. Born in Murshidabad, West Bengal, he preferred solitude over stardom, often recording in his home studio and avoiding Bollywood’s social circles. After 15 years of continuous singing, concerts, and compositions, he perhaps simply needed space to rediscover his artistic freedom.
Arijit clarified that he isn’t quitting music, only film playback. His fans believe this might mark a new era, where the singer explores independent music and creates on his own terms. As he said in his emotional note, ‘It was a wonderful journey.’
For now, Arijit Singh may have paused his film songs, but his voice will continue to echo in listeners’ hearts, timeless, soulful, and irreplaceable.
