Gurugram Weather Update: North India hit by heavy rains across Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR. IMD issues alert; Haryana schools closed on Sept 2. Rising Yamuna levels prompt opening of Hathnikund barrage gates; Gurugram witnesses intense showers.
Weather Highlights
North India continues to face relentless rainfall, with Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR among the worst-affected regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy showers in the coming days. In Haryana, authorities have ordered all schools to stay closed today, September 2, following the weather alert.
Continuous downpours have caused water levels in several rivers, including the Yamuna, to rise, forcing officials to open the floodgates at the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district. Gurugram witnessed intense rainfall on Monday, recording over 100 mm between 3 pm and 7 pm, and has now been placed under an orange alert. More heavy to very heavy showers are expected in the city on Tuesday.
The IMD forecasts widespread rain across Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh over the next 24 to 36 hours, with some areas likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
Gurgaon Traffic DCP Rajesh Mohan, in a conversation with NDTV, said that heavy rains during peak office hours caused severe traffic jams and flooding, leading to over 570 distress calls. Traffic police towed 288 stalled vehicles, while 1,190 personnel along with cranes, chainsaws, and water pumps were deployed to clear major choke points. Authorities have marked 120 waterlogged areas and are coordinating with GMDA and MCG to tackle the situation efficiently.
Delhi experienced intermittent showers on Monday. For today, the forecast predicts a cloudy sky with moderate rain. The capital’s maximum temperature is expected to reach around 31°C, while the minimum could dip to 22°C. Gurugram, along with Delhi, continues to brace for further downpours this week.
