Mahashivratri, known as “The Great Night of Shiva,” is a spiritually important night. Sadhguru explains why Mahashivratri is celebrated and how we can benefit from its significance.
Mahashivratri, “The Great Night of Shiva,” is the most important event in India’s spiritual calendar. Shivratri happens on the 14th day of every lunar month, but the one in February-March, called Mahashivratri, is the most spiritually important. On this night, the Earth’s position causes an increase in energy within people, helping them reach their spiritual peak. To take advantage of this, a nightlong festival is held, where it’s important to stay awake and sit with your spine straight to help the energy flow properly.
Mahashivratri holds great importance for people on the spiritual path, for families, and for those with worldly ambitions. Families observe it as the wedding anniversary of Shiva, while the ambitious view it as the day Shiva defeated his enemies. For ascetics, however, it marks the day Shiva became completely still, becoming one with Mount Kailash. In yogic tradition, Shiva is not worshipped as a god but honored as the first Guru, from whom yoga originated. After meditating for ages, he reached a state of complete stillness, and this day, Mahashivratri, represents that stillness for ascetics.
Shivratri falls on the darkest day of the month, and celebrating both the monthly Shivratri and the special day of Mahashivratri may seem like a celebration of darkness. Logically, most people prefer light over darkness. However, the word “Shiva” means “that which is not.” While “that which is” refers to existence and creation, “that which is not” refers to emptiness. When we focus on small things, we see creation, but when we look for the bigger picture, we realize that the largest presence in existence is the vast emptiness.
The holy festival of Maha Shivratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed with great devotion every year. In 2025, it will be celebrated on February 26. On this special day, devotees visit temples, offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and observe fasts as a sign of their faith. Share warm wishes, messages, and greetings with your loved ones to make this occasion even more special.
