Happy Krishna Janmashtami

Janmashtami is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism, entirely devoted to the worship of Lord Krishna. This year marks the 5251st birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, and people across the world will be celebrating his birthday. In 2024, Janmashtami will be observed on August 26.

What is Krishna Janmashtami?

India’s rich diversity creates a perfect backdrop for the harmonious and joyful celebration of various festivals. One such occasion is Sri Krishna Janmashtami 2024, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Observed on the eighth day of the Bhadrapada month, this festival is also known as Gokulashtami. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Krishna Bhagwan on Earth to defeat Kansa, the demon who was the brother of Devaki.

Significance of Janmashtami

As per Hindu scriptures, Sri Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura on Ashtami Tithi, the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month. Kansa, the demon king of Mathura, and Devaki’s brother, was foretold by a prophecy that his death would come at the hands of Devaki’s eighth son. To prevent this, Kansa imprisoned his own sister and her husband.

In an effort to stop the prophecy, Kansa attempted to kill each of Devaki’s children as soon as they were born. However, when Devaki’s eighth child was born, a magical force caused the entire palace to fall into a deep sleep. Seizing the moment, Vasudeva saved the infant by secretly taking him to the home of Yashodha and Nanda in Vrindavan. This child, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, later became known as Sri Krishna and eventually killed Kansa, bringing an end to his reign of terror.

Janmashtami holds great significance for Hindus, and Lord Krishna’s devotees celebrate this day with immense joy and grandeur worldwide. On the auspicious Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, Lord Krishna, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born. Although he was raised by Yashoda Maiya and Nand Baba, his biological parents were Devki and Vasudeva. On this day, people worship the child form of Lord Krishna, known as Laddoo Gopal Ji. Temples are beautifully decorated with vibrant flowers and lights, and a variety of desserts are prepared as bhog prasad. Devotees also buy new clothes and accessories for their Laddoo Gopal Ji in celebration.
