Imran Khan Asked to Leave India: Why Mumbai Police Issued Notice

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, known for films like Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, has been asked to leave India by October 28, 2026. The notice was issued after he participated in a protest in Mumbai against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Khan is an American citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. According to reports, the notice was issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, following allegations that his participation in the protest violated rules applicable to foreign nationals.

On October 10, Imran Khan attended a gathering at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. The protest was linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Khan was accompanied by his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin, Zayne Marie Khan. All three were detained by Mumbai Police during the protest and released later.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya subsequently sought action against the actor, raising concerns about his participation as a foreign citizen. Authorities later issued the notice directing Khan to leave India by October 28. The precise legal grounds for the action have been questioned in media reports. .

What Do Sections 7 and 29 of the Act Say?

The notice refers to Sections 7 and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Section 7 gives the Central Government powers to regulate or restrict the entry, stay, departure and movement of foreign nationals in India. Section 29 deals with the removal of foreign nationals in specified circumstances, including certain violations of the law or an adverse security report.

What Is an OCI Card?

The Overseas Citizen of India scheme was introduced in 2005 for eligible people of Indian origin who hold foreign citizenship. An OCI card offers benefits such as a lifelong, multiple-entry visa, subject to applicable rules. However, it does not grant Indian citizenship.

The case has brought attention to the rules governing foreign nationals and OCI cardholders in India, particularly their participation in political protests. The legal implications of the notice remain an important part of the developing story.
