Mahavir Jayanti 2026, also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is among the most sacred and widely celebrated festivals in Jainism – observed with deep devotion by Jain communities across India and around the world. This year, the festival marks a particularly special milestone.
The Correct Date: March 31, 2026
There has been some confusion about whether the festival falls on March 30 or 31. According to the traditional Panchang, Mahavir Jayanti is observed on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi. Since this tithi prevails during sunrise on March 31, the festival is rightly celebrated on this date. To be precise, the Trayodashi Tithi begins at 07:09 AM on March 30 and ends at 06:55 AM on March 31, making Tuesday, March 31 the correct day of celebration. This year marks the 2624th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir.
The History of Mahavir Jayanti
Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama, Bihar. He preached five great vows – Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha. At the age of 30, Mahavira renounced his royal life, abandoned all worldly possessions, and became a wandering monk. He spent the next 12.5 years in complete silence, intense meditation, and severe austerity, finally attaining Kevala Jnana (omniscience) at age 42.He was the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism, and his teachings laid the ethical and spiritual foundation of the faith.
How is Mahaveer Jayanti Celebrated?
The celebrations are vibrant yet deeply spiritual. The day typically begins with an early morning Prabhat Pheri, followed by a grand procession or Rath Yatra. Idols of Lord Mahavira are placed on beautifully decorated chariots and taken through the streets, accompanied by devotional songs, chants, and cultural performances.Devotees also perform the abhisheka – a ceremonial anointment of Mahavir statues – and offer food to the poor as an act of compassion.
Beyond rituals and celebrations, Mahavir Jayanti holds a deeper meaning. It encourages individuals to pause and reflect on their lifestyle choices and moral values, highlighting the importance of peaceful coexistence and compassion toward all living beings. As Lord Mahavir himself said: “Ahimsa is the highest religion.” In today’s world, that message remains as powerful as ever.
