Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad: Air India confirmed that 241 of the 242 people on the Ahmedabad to London Boeing 787-8 flight lost their lives in the tragic crash.
An Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London, with 242 people on board, crashed soon after taking off on Thursday afternoon (June 12, 2025). Sadly, only one person survived, and the rest could not be saved. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among those who died. Air India confirmed that 241 people lost their lives in the crash.
The Boeing 787-8 plane took off at 1:38 p.m. Just five minutes later, it crashed into the B.J. Medical College hostel mess, located 5 km from the airport, where over 100 students were having lunch. A huge explosion followed, sending thick smoke high into the air, which could be seen from a distance.
Pilots sent Mayday signal before the plane crash
The pilots reportedly sent out a ‘Mayday’ distress signal right after takeoff, indicating a serious emergency, but they did not respond to any further messages from air traffic control.
After visiting the plane crash site of the Boeing 787-8, Prime Minister Modi holds a meeting with ministers and officials to review the situation.
After visiting the only survivor of the crash in the hospital, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that no other passengers could be saved. He explained that the massive explosion and the large amount of fuel on board — about 1.25 lakh litres — made rescue impossible. The survivor of the plane crash was identified as Vishwaskumar Ramesh, who was sitting in seat A11 on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and was travelling to London with his brother.
