Mumbai train accident

Mumbai train accident – Four people died and nine were injured after falling from two local trains.

The accident in Thane district, Maharashtra, happened when the bags of people standing on the edges of two local trains going in opposite directions hit each other.

Four people died and nine were hurt after falling from two moving local trains in Thane district, Maharashtra, on Monday (June 9, 2025), according to officials.

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. between Mumbra and Diwa stations when the bags of passengers standing on the edges (footboards) of the two trains, which were going in opposite directions, hit each other, said Central Railway spokesperson Swapnil Nila.

The train guard reported the incident to railway officials, and it happened during the busy morning hours.

Casualties in the Mumbai Accident

The Thane Municipal Corporation said that 13 people fell from the trains. The four who died were identified as Ketan Dilip Saroj (23), Rahul Santosh Gupta, Mayur Shah (50), and Vicky Babasaheb Mukhedal (34), who was a policeman.

The nine injured are being treated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, Thane. Two of them — Shiva Gawali (23) and Anil More (40) — are seriously injured and have been moved to a better-equipped hospital.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident “unfortunate” and said the Railways have started an investigation to find out exactly what happened. The injured are receiving treatment at Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital

The Mumbai Railway Passengers Association has asked for action to be taken against the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). They said they had already complained twice to the Railway Board that the Diva-Kalwa route was dangerous for commuters.

“Many people have died on this route before. When two new tracks were added between Kalyan and Thane, we thought there would be more local train services for passengers. But instead, the DRM gave more importance to mail and express trains on these tracks,” the association said.

Railways Announcement

After the incident, the Railway Board said that by January 2026, new non-AC trains with better comfort and safety features would likely be introduced. Also, 238 AC train sets are being built for the Mumbai local train service.

Many people from far-off places like Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Kalyan, Vasind, Khardi, Asangaon, and Titwala use these local trains to get to work.

Deepak Walve, a passenger from Ulhasnagar who was on one of the trains during the incident, said, “This kind of thing happens regularly, but people are only noticing it now because someone died. The government keeps launching new trains and runs long-distance and express trains on these tracks, but doesn’t add more coaches or local trains.” He was travelling to Thane.
