The current Delhi assembly’s term ends on February 23. The new chief minister is expected to be sworn in at a large event at Ramlila Maidan on February 20 at 4:30 pm. The BJP defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won only 22 seats in the election.
The AAP criticized the BJP, stating that it had taken them 10 days to appoint a chief minister and cabinet. Former Delhi CM Atishi remarked that it seemed the BJP did not have a CM candidate and suggested that PM Modi had no confidence in the 48 elected MLAs.
The BJP typically assigns party leaders as observers before the meeting with the elected members. These observers talk to the newly elected MLAs and share their feedback with the central leadership, who then decide on the name of the Delhi CM (Chief Minister).
Who will be the next Delhi CM?
Since the election results were announced on February 8, several names have been mentioned as potential candidates for Chief Minister. Some of the top contenders include Parvesh Verma, who won against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh), Vijender Gupta (Rohini), Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar), Ashish Sood (Janakpuri), Pawan Sharma (Uttam Nagar), and Ajay Mahawar (Ghonda).

While the Delhi CM post is still under mystery, the BJP secured a strong victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats. The election was a head-to-head contest between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed Delhi for two consecutive terms. AAP managed to win only 22 seats.
