Earthquake in Hyderabad

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Mulugu in Telangana, with tremors felt in Hyderabad.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:27 am on Wednesday, with a depth of 40 kilometers and its epicenter in the Mulugu region, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology.

Early Wednesday morning, earthquakes across the Telugu states caused widespread panic as tremors were felt in several districts. Reports indicate that a 5.3 magnitude quake struck Telangana’s Mulugu at 7:26 AM.

Tremors were experienced in Vijayawada, Jaggayapet, and nearby villages. Light shaking was also reported in Tadithota and Morampudi areas of Rajahmundry. Similar occurrences were observed in the Chintoor division, affecting villages in Koonavaram, VR Puram, and Etapaka mandals.

Warangal city and nearby areas experienced mild tremors, causing residents to panic and rush outside. The shaking lasted only a few seconds, leaving locals confused. Earthquakes were also reported in Kothagudem town and Manuguru sub-division, with tremors felt between 7:27 and 7:28 AM. In Gangaram, Mahabubabad district, the vibrations were stronger, even causing some people to fall from their chairs.

A social media user known as ‘Telangana Weatherman’ posted on X that a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in Telangana in the past 20 years, occurred with its epicenter in Mulugu. The user also mentioned that the tremors were felt throughout Telangana, including Hyderabad, and noted that another earthquake had struck the Godavari riverbed, but this time with greater intensity.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. Telangana is located in Seismic Zone II, the zone with the lowest earthquake risk. India is divided into four seismic zones, with Zone V being the most earthquake-prone. Mild tremors were felt in parts of Hyderabad, including Borabanda, Rahmat Nagar, Karmika Nagar, and Yusufguda. As of now, no major damage or casualties have been reported, and further details are awaited.
