Google Doodle is celebrating chess in honor of the start of the FIDE World Championship 2024 final. This classic game, played by two players on a board of 64 black and white squares, is believed to have originated in India in the sixth century. It evolved significantly by the 15th century, with the first international competition held in 1851. Since then, chess has continued to grow, introducing new variations like speed chess and timed matches.
FIDE World Championship 2024 final
The FIDE World Championship final kicks off in Singapore today and will run until December 13. Matches will start at 9:30 PM IST, following a 14-game classical format, each lasting over four hours. The top players will compete to reach 7.5 points and claim the title. In the event of a tie, exciting rapid and blitz games, featuring fast-paced three-minute rounds, will determine the winner.
Eighteen-year-old Indian chess prodigy Gukesh is set to face reigning world champion Ding Liren in a 14-game World Chess Championship showdown. Gukesh aims to become the 18th world champion and, if successful, will be the youngest ever to hold the title. His opponent, China’s Ding Liren, enters the match as a self-proclaimed underdog. Despite being the current world champion, Ding has experienced a decline in form, now ranked 23rd globally with a classical rating of 2728, while Gukesh, ranked 5th with a rating of 2783, poses a formidable challenge.
Although Ding Liren holds a slight advantage in their head-to-head record, Gukesh has been rapidly rising through the chess rankings, demonstrating immense talent. His impressive showings in the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the Chess Olympiad have cemented his status as a rising star.
This is a significant moment for India: will 18-year-old Gukesh become the youngest-ever World Champion, continuing Vishy Anand’s legacy by bringing the title back to India? Or will reigning champion Ding Liren defend his title?
Let us hope for the best!
